ACCESSIBLE CYCLING – Everyone can cycle!


Pedal Power has an increasing selection of specialist bikes allowing people of all abilities and ages to cycle.


Accessories such as footplates and hand mitts allow feet and hands to be secured to the bike, so enabling active participation.


An overhead hoist is available for transfer onto the bike.


Bikes are available for free, but donations of at £2.50 per hour are welcome.


Bikes for family/friends/carers/support workers are provided free of charge.

The bikes available are described below. If you don’t see a suitable bike, call us on 029 2039 0713 – we are increasing our stock of bikes all the time.

SIDE BY SIDE

side-by-side The Side By Side is one of our most popular trikes. It is tandem trike that is ideal for use by family groups and is also great for accessible cycling. The Side By Side is suitable for those who cannot pedal through their own strength or ability, as it has an assisted pedalling setting. Its features include:

  • Wide stable design
  • Independent or linked pedalling
  • 5 hub gears that allow you to change gear whilst moving or stationary
  • Easily adjustable seats and handlebars
  • Pivoting seats for easy entry and exit
  • Foot-plate option available for those who find pedalling difficult
  • Large high backed seats for extra support


DUET

Image 1 This tandem is an amazing conception that combines a wheelchair and a bike into a tandem that provides real mobility and fun. (It allows a person who is unable to actively contribute to the cycling to still enjoy the activity). The beauty of this bike is that it separates in seconds allowing the wheelchair user to be independently mobile. Its features include:

  • Adjustable angle on front passenger seat
  • Adjustable footrest and armrests and headrest for front passenger
  • Secure harness for front passenger
  • Adjustable suspension saddle and handlebars
  • 7 hub gears that allow you to change gear whilst moving or stationary

(Weight limit for chair = 120kg. Rider = 90kg)


MISSION
TRIKE

Image 2 The Mission Trikes were developed with the assistance of parents who have children and teenagers with various balance problems and disabilities. Therapists advise that the exercise of cycling in many instances enhances muscular development and the Mission Trikes are ideal. Features include:

  • Large 24” wheels that make it easy to ride further and faster
  • Choice of 6 gears
  • Rear basket for carrying luggage


RIFTON TRIKES

rifton trike The Wrangler (large) and Ranger (medium) trikes are designed for children and adolescents with disabilities. They have a range of features that help enable people of varying levels of ability to ride.Features include:

  • Low step through making it easy to get on and off the trike
  • Large saddle provides extra support and is height adjustable
  • Adjustable and removable backrest and trunk support
  • Large loop handlebar makes it easy to hold
  • Steering rod to enable assisted steering
  • Movable brake lever to make stopping easy and safe
  • Detachable abductor for those who require knee separation or abduction(Height limits – Wrangler 58”-72” Ranger 48”-60”)(Weight limits – Wrangler 200lbs Ranger 160lbs)


THERAPLAY TRACKER TRIKE

Image 3 The Tracker is designed for teenagers and adults. Features include:

  • Large ‘tractor’ style seat for added comfort and support
  • Shortened cranks for a tighter pedalling arc
  • Fixed wheel gearing making the trike simple and easy to pedal
  • Adjustable seat height
  • Large handlebar making it easy to grab and steer

HAND-BIKES

Image 4 Hand-cycling is very popular for recreation and is also quickly growing into a competitive sport for disabled athletes. Hand-bikes are a great way to get your aerobic exercise. The benefits of hand-cycling to overall health, physical conditioning and quality of life are substantial. With a hand cycle you can attain the freedom of cycling independently, or join your cycling friends and family members in outdoor exercise. Hand-bikes are great for increasing strength, stamina and endurance.
